I have been lucky enough to get some travel insurance for a holiday to Corfu. I was covered for CLL and previous heart disease for one weeks holiday at a premium of £75.75. The Company was

Freedom Travel Insurance (for people living with pre-existing medical conditions.
Telephone No. 01223 454 290
www.freedominsure.co.uk
I also found the questions asked were not so intrusive as other companies, so give them a try if you're going away.

I have been unable to get travel insurance for a few years now as I have been heavily treated for CLL and also have a history of heart disease. So thankyou to Thomas Cook who put me onto this company and enabled me to go away with peace of mind.

Sylvie

We are off to the USA at the end of this month and will be using (as we did last time) Gill Noble/JD Consultants who are very understanding and don't take advantage.
I trawled around and got some quotes of £700+ but came back this company who charge £144 for me and the wife and 2 children - and thats for 12 months. Easily the best deal.
Find them in Bromley, Kent on 01689 859102/3 or 4.
Keep well.
Phil

I have had CLL now for ten years and have had some considerable experience with obtaining travel insurance or not as the case has sometimes been. I also have a Lloyds TSB Gold Card travel insurance with whom I have communicated every step of my treatment and prognosis.

The impression that I get from insurance companies is that they need a clear six months of remission and no treatment given in that time to qualify for travel insurance. This is a tough call and, indeed, Lloyds will currently cover me for anything other than CLL connected medical issues until I have had a clear six months without any form of treatment or medication except for the daily viral and bacterial control meds. To give an example, although my last FCR was in January this year, I developed Swine Flu on my return from a recent holiday in July which then made me neutrapenic – the first time since I was diagnosed. Had I still been abroad, I would not have been covered and would have had to pay for the expensive Granolyte to get me back to normal.

Always wanting to be on the cautious side with travel insurance, I do urge a clear understanding of the small print and, more to the point, be absolutely accurate about the current prognosis and the information given. One error, however slight, will invariably invalidate the insurance. The insurance for the visit to the USA sounds good which assumes that the criteria that I have described has probably been met. On the other hand, it maybe that this company has the ability to take on board Leukaemia customers. Is there a website of the company that we can look at?

Whilst I suspect that just about everything that can be said about travel insurance has been said here’s my tViolationenath.

I have had world wide annual travel cover for some considerable time, long before CLL but post my wife’s breast cancer, which is underwritten by AXA. Now I know all the covers AXA underwrite will be different but it may be worth shopping around. The clause on my cover is very simple if a consultant or my GP say they are happy for me to travel a destination then I’m covered.

It’s not cheap my renewal this year was just short of £300 for my wife and me but it’s good coverage and it is worldwide i.e. covers North America which I understand ups the anti somewhat.

I too use Gill Noble and have done for about 3 years now. I have annual European cover for myself and partner - about £60. It includes cover for CLL (and other bits and pieces!). I've always found them to be so kind and helpful. I would definitely recommend trying them.

I just phoned Freedom Insurance for a quote and they said it would cost £491 just to insure my husband only for two weeks to Cuba! We already have cover on our Natwest current account policy for everything other than the CLL, so I think it's a bit too expensive especially since he's never received any treatment for it yet.

The issue of travel insurance is not uncommon as far as some cancers are concerned. I have taken out insurance that covers me for all but anything directly related to CLL. OK, you may say that the insurance company will always argue the case. However, I pinpoint mine down to specifics and confirm them in writing. For example, if I get run down by a car, covered? If you get my drift. I also have free travel insurance with my bank. With them, I have a review. They argue that providing a clear six months passes after chemotherapy with no issue, they will cover me for CLL as well whilst abroad. Last July I became neutropenic following a bout of seasonal flu. I had GSTF booster to improve the neutrophil from .3%. I am now due for another review and I am reasonably confident that my bank will insure me again. I am year nine with CLL and have had two six month course of chemotherapy.
